Staying safe while enjoying Naples water activities
Your Guide for Fun on the Waves

With its turquoise waters, year-round sunshine, and laid-back coastal charm, Naples water activities provide an unforgettable adventure.
Before launching into any Naples water activities, visitors should be aware of Florida’s boating laws. You must complete a boating safety course or pass a temporary exam if you were born on or after January 1, 1988, and plan to operate a boat or jet ski. Many rental companies offer the temporary Florida Boating Safety Education Certificate. Some out-of-state certifications may be accepted, but it’s always best to check with your rental provider ahead of time.
Florida law requires all boats to carry essential safety gear, including a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each passenger and a throwable flotation device for larger boats. Children under six must always wear a life jacket on boats under 26 feet while underway.
Boats must use navigation lights at dawn, dusk, and night, and jet skis are not allowed after dark. Other required items include a whistle or horn, a fire extinguisher, and visual distress signals when heading offshore.
Boating under the influence is illegal, with a BAC limit of 0.08%, and operators of PWCs must use a safety lanyard that shuts off the engine if they fall overboard. New regulations under “Lucy’s Law” also increase penalties for reckless boating and failure to remain at an accident scene.
One of the most popular of Naples' water activities is fishing. It comes with its own set of rules. Anyone age 16 or older who is not a Florida resident must obtain a fishing license to fish in saltwater. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) offers various options, including 3-day, 7-day, and annual licenses. Fortunately, if you’re fishing from a licensed charter boat, you may not need one at all. Still, checking the most current FWC guidelines before casting your line is highly recommended.
Many popular catches come with specific size and bag limits. Some species, such as tarpon, require a special tag. Goliath grouper and sawfish are fully protected and must be released immediately.
Whether you're spending your day kayaking through mangrove tunnels, reeling in redfish, or cruising the Gulf, a little planning goes a long way in keeping your vacation safe and stress-free.
