Naples is considered a hidden gem nestled among some of the nation’s finest dining and shopping as well as expansive powdery white beaches ranked among the best. Therefore, it’s called the Crown Jewel of Southwest Florida. Named after the city of the same name in Italy because of similarities, Naples has an interesting history. Two men from Kentucky formed Naples in 1885 — John Williams, a senator from Louisville, and Walter Haldeman, the owner of the Louisville Courier Journal newspaper. They formed The Naples Town Improvement Company and purchased the land for $3 an acre. They bought 3,712 acres for $11,136. Collier County was formed years later in 1923.


The area has grown tremendously but has maintained its relaxed atmosphere and small-town charm. It is Florida’s largest county by land area with 1,998 square miles. The next biggest is Palm Beach and then Miami-Dade. The county’s population is more than 330,000 while the city of Naples is about 20,000.

The City’s Oldest Home

The house is on the National Register of Historic Places. It offers guided tours, a museum, and educational programs.


Golf Capital of the World

This is a self-proclaimed title for the city but there’s no denying that there is an abundance of amazing public and private courses. According to the Golf Channel, Naples ranks second in the nation for the most golf holes per capita.


Naples Art District

The Naples Art District has developed into the largest concentration of professional working artist studios and galleries in Southwest Florida with more than 80 working artists. These artists’ shops and galleries are in the area bordered by Pine Ridge Road, Airport-Pulling Road, Taylor Road, and J and C Blvd.


Winter Wine Festival

Every year, Naples hosts a wine festival charity event that attracts people from all over the world. The Naples Winter Wine Festival is ranked among the top 10 arts and entertainment events for wealthy Americans. This ranking by the Luxury Institute is based on exclusivity, quality, and prestige. It’s also been named the most successful charity wine festival in the nation, having raised $244 million since it started in 200 for the Naples Children & Education Foundation. In 2022, it raised nearly $22 million.


100-Year-Old Gardens

If you like tropical plants, you must plan a trip to the Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens, 1590 Goodlette-Frank Rd, Naples, FL, 34102. It started as a botanical garden more than 100 years ago by Botanist Dr. Henry Nehrling. He had more than 3,000 species of tropical plants in his “Tropical Garden,” and some plantings still remain today. In addition to the gardens, the area has been home to the zoo for more than 50 years. It’s a popular spot for locals and tourists.
